Selections can vary dramatically depending on the class type, teacher, and time of year—particularly if you pull your auditory inspiration from the stars and planets.
For some, like yoga teacher and astrologer Laura Black, sequencing around the stars is an art—one that’s aided greatly by her playlists curated with specific astrological transits in mind.
The Sounds of the Season
Theming yoga classes to sync with specific astrological seasons offers prescriptive energy to play with (and off of), creating a framework for the pace and feel of your flow. While each season of the zodiac comes with a set of general vibes (Pisces season is dreamy! Leo season is bold!), yoga teachers who are also astrologers, like Black are able to delve into specific planetary movements and interactions—which makes for more nuanced practices and playlists.
“If I do a good job of creating the playlist, it’s not just like, ‘Okay, we’re in Taurus season: Taurus Season Playlist!’” says Black. “I’m going for this Taurus season, and all the major astrological transits and Taurus issues that we’re dealing with.”
Black started her astro playlists by collecting music that called certain signs to mind. “Every time I hear a song that feels like a certain astrological sign, I create a playlist,” she says. As the actual season approaches, Black pulls from the master, adding new music and making adjustments to suit the nature of the (roughly) 30-day window.
But the coolest aspect of an astrology-driven musical set? If pieced together well, the collection of songs will effortlessly evoke the spirit of the season.
Black notes that there’s often a correlation between the nature of the season and how she ends up feeling about the accompanying playlist. Take her Aries playlists, for example. “I find myself getting sick of them so fast and impatiently waiting for the next playlist,” she laughs.
