There’s something about mornings that can feel…relentless. The first few minutes of being awake can activate the urge to check your phone, rush straight to your to-do list, or otherwise be wildly productive to the point where easing into your day doesn’t even feel like an option. Before you know it, that mindset has you autopiloting through your entire day.

These moments are exactly when a 5-minute morning yoga flow can be the most effective. It’s a quick, low-stakes way to interrupt your usual wake-up routine by moving your body, focusing your mind, and setting a positive vibe for your morning—before the outside world takes over. It doesn’t require a massive time commitment or even a lot of energy. If you have five minutes, you have enough time to tame your morning and, ultimately, your day.

5-Minute Morning Yoga Flow to Start Your Day

This short sequence offers a simple moment to pour into yourself first, so you can move through the rest of your day feeling a a little calmer and more relaxed.

1. Child’s Pose

Come to your hands and knees, draw your hips toward your heels, walk your hands forward, and lower your forehead to the mat or a block in Child’s Pose. Stay here for a few breaths, then return to your hands and knees.

2. Cat-Cow

From your hands and knees, arch your back and lift your chin in Cow Pose. Take a few breaths here. Then round your back and lower your chin toward your chest in Cat Pose. Repeat Cat-Cow for a few rounds.

3. Thread the Needle

From your hands and knees, reach your right arm out to the side and toward the ceiling. Then send your right hand in the opposite direction, underneath your chest and through the space between your left hand and knee. Rest your right shoulder and the side of your head on the mat in Thread the Needle. Take a few breaths here.

Reach your right arm back toward the ceiling, then plant your hand on the mat on your hands and knees. Repeat Thread the Needle on the left side.

6. Squat

From Rag Doll, separate your feet wider than hip-width apart. Bend your knees and lower your hips toward the space between your heels in Squat. Bring your hands to prayer position (anjali mudra) in front of your chest. Gently press your elbows against your inner thighs. Take a few breaths here, then sit on the mat.

7. Cross-Legged Forward Fold

Sit on the mat in a cross-legged position. Walk your hands forward and allow your head, neck, and chest to relax over your legs. Take a few breaths here, then walk your hands back toward your body and slowly roll up.

8. Baby Backbend

From your cross-legged position, reach your arms overhead. Then lower them slightly and bend your elbows in a cactus shape.  Gently reach your chest forward, arch your back, and lift your chin (as if you were doing Cow Pose) in a baby backbend. Release the backbend as you draw your hands back to your chest in prayer position. Take a deep breath and take your time as you let it go.
