After practicing and teaching hot yoga on different mats for more than a decade, we’ve compiled our list of the best hot yoga mats designed to deliver grip, cushioning, durability, and ease of cleaning. The best mat for hot yoga overall is the Yogi Peace Club Deluxe Mat, which delivers an insanely anti-slip grip and dense cushioning. Budget-conscious hot yogis, we recommend the Brogi Yoga Printed Performance Mat for its combination of traits, including bold and playful designs that you won’t find elsewhere.

Whether you’re obsessed with hot yoga or take a sweaty studio class here and there to get your fix, you know that much of your experience is determined by your mat. Specifically, you need a hot yoga mat designed to withstand the challenges of a heated yoga practice. Namely, something that’s grippy, durable, cushioned, and doesn’t turn into a Slip ‘N Slide the moment you begin to sweat.

In the 15 years that I’ve been practicing hot yoga, I’ve continually been on the search for the best hot yoga mat. Eventually, I started to appreciate that there isn’t a single “perfect” mat for everyone. There are aspects of different designs that work well for some and not for others, which I’ve definitely learned from my own experience and from talking with dozens of yoga teachers and students about their preferences over the years.

And even the best yoga mats can require some trade-offs. You’ll find mats that have terrific grip but zero cushioning. Or mats with amazing cushioning that feel way too heavy. Or mats that sound good on paper but commit the ultimate indiscretion of never truly drying and then eventually starting to smell.

Following are the hot yoga mats that are designed to take on the most essential challenges that come with heated studios—namely, grip—as well as other considerations such as cushioning and heft. I’ll also explain why each yoga mat stands out, which designs are best for affordability and portability, and who would most appreciate each style.

Best Hot Yoga Mat Overall

Yogi Peace Club Deluxe Mat

Material: 100% natural rubber + polyurethane
Thickness: 5mm
Dimensions: 73 x 27 inches

Pros and Cons
+ Smooth, anti-slip surface
+ Dense cushioning
+ Ample surface area yet lightweight
– Shipping costs + tariffs

Yogi Peace Club isn’t as well-known as a lot of hot yoga mat brands, yet it perfectly balances the most essential traits—smooth surface, anti-slip grip, and excellent cushioning.

When I sweat on this mat, it’s immediately absorbed, so the surface of the mat never becomes too slippery. And the underside doesn’t shift or wrinkle on the floor as I transition between poses.

But what makes the mat truly unique is its dense cushioning. I have cystic fibrosis, which is a life-threatening lung disease that also causes chronic and severe full-body pain. Because of this, I’m very particular about my mats. I need that extra support—and the Deluxe does not disappoint. I’ve never needed to reach for a blanket to place on top of the mat, making it ideal for anyone who wants ample support in a 5mm mat minus the added bulk or weight.

The dimensions are also more generous than some hot yoga mats, so you won’t feel constrained, and the surface is marked with a laser-engraved design that doubles as alignment lines.

Online commenters echo all of the above—grip, cushioning, and overall yoga mat bliss. As one person mentioned, “As a sweaty gal, I don’t slide onto my face.”

Yogi Peace Club is an Australian company, so if you’re located elsewhere, you’ll need to pay for shipping and tariffs.

Best for: Those looking for a mat that has great cushioning and a smooth, anti-slip surface.

Best Budget Hot Yoga Mat

Brogi Yoga

Materials: Natural rubber
Thickness: 5mm
Dimensions: 72 x 26 inches

Pros and Cons
+ BOLD designs
+ Relatively affordable price
– Slightly narrow
– Lacks serious cushioning

Brogi Yoga is a newcomer to the yoga mat scene with a somewhat more accessible price point than most hot yoga mats. Not only that, they make unique and seriously loud designs. I’m a little extra, so when I first saw their mats, I thought, “Finally, there’s a mat that can match my vibe.” I opted for the star pattern but there are also sassy animal prints, Barbie pink lightning bolts, even smiley faces.

What I appreciate about the Brogi mat, other than the audacious designs, is that the mat stays in place, absorbs sweat, and is generally one of the best mats I’ve ever used. It’s also slightly larger than a lot of yoga mats, so you can take up all the space you need.

If you’re in a super-heated space, you might find the grip slightly lacking and want to drop a towel on top. Brogi also makes a suede-topped mat for hot yoga. I and a lot of people I know don’t particularly care for the feel of those kinds of mats, but knock yourself out if that’s your aesthetic.

Although the Brogi Yoga mat is 5mm thick, which errs on the thicker side of most mats, the cushioning doesn’t feel quite as dense or supportive as other mats. The mat is durable, though. I’ve been practicing and teaching on my Brogi since last November and it still looks brand new.

So no, you no longer need to choose between unique designs and a quality mat. As one online commenter mentioned, “The quality for the price you pay is unbeatable.”

You can pay even less for a Brogi when you opt for a design from the “Misprints” category, which drops the price to $59.99. You simply need to handle some “minor cosmetic flaws” in your mat.

Best for: Hot yogis who need a serious mat that stays put and desire an unserious design that stands out amid all the neutral colors and minimalist designs.

Best Hot Yoga Mat With Cushioning

b, Mat Strong (6mm)

Materials: Natural and synthetic rubber
Thickness: 6mm
Dimensions: 71 x 26 inches

Pros and Cons
+ Ample cushioning
+ Sweatproof
– Heavy
– Magnet for pet fur

The b, Mat Strong has been my go-to mat for years and it has the strongest grip I’ve ever experienced. Its textured surface is actually grippy almost to a fault, especially if you appreciate complex transitions that require your feet to move seamlessly.

Similarly, feeling like you’re kneeling on concrete is a pretty common experience among a lot of mats. But the Strong’s cushioning is thick and dense enough to make any floor feel comfortable. That support comes at a cost, though. The 6mm mat is thick and heavy. So you probably won’t be able to fit it into a yoga mat bag and good luck if you regularly carry your mat as you walk several city blocks to class.

The brand has been a sleeper among yoga students and teachers for years and has a dedicated following. b, Mat is what we rely on for mat rentals at the yoga studio I co-own and, despite being subjected to daily use, the mats last for years. If you practice at home, though, know that the textured surface is a magnet for dog hair and cleaning it is kind of a pain.

One thing about the mat design is it’s always minimal and lets the quality do the talking.

Best for: Anyone who wants serious support and cushioning. If you make a lot of fluid transitions that require your hands and feet to rotate smoothly, it might be too grippy for you.

Best Hot Yoga Mat for Grip

Liforme Classic Yoga Mat

$160 at Liforme

Materials: Natural rubber base + eco-polyurethane surface
Thickness: 4.2mm
Dimensions: 73 x 27 inches

Pros and Cons
+ Incredibly grippy yet smooth surface
+ No toxic anything
+ Generous dimensions
– Smudges and scuffs sorta easily
– Pricey

Bold statement: Liforme makes the best-feeling, anti-slip surface of any hot yoga mat I’ve ever tried. The surface is unmatched. (Check online and you’ll read hundreds, if not thousands, of similar accolades from Liforme devotées.) No matter how often I’m wooed by a different new mat, I always come back to this one for its ability to keep me grounded in a sweaty class yet without it feeling overly grippy.
.
Because the smooth top is so pliable, it balances grippiness with an ability to execute seamless transitions. Sometimes in transitions, I’ll need to kick back out the mat after it folded up a bit, but most of the time it stays in place. When I practice on this mat in a heated room, I don’t need a towel and rarely need to wipe my hands to make sure I don’t slip.

Like some of the other faves, Liforme boasts slightly larger dimensions than a lot of mats and comes with alignment lines. Because the Classic is only 4mm thick, it’s not terrific for joint support. It’s super lightweight, though, and easy to carry. The primary complaint I have about this mat is that it has a short lifespan. I’ve made holes in every Lifeform I’ve had from my nails dragging in during transitions. (Also, don’t let our pets near this at home!)  And for the price,I struggle with that. But honestly the grip is so good, I just deal and repurchase it every couple of years. Win some, lose some.

Best for: Hot vinyasa or power yoga lovers who want grip without sacrificing fluid transitions.

Best Lightweight Hot Yoga Mat

Yoga Hustle The Mat

Materials: 100% recycled materials
Thickness: 4.5mm
Dimensions: 73 x 27 inches

Pros and Cons
+ The Goldilocks of grippiness
+ No toxic anything
+ Generous dimensions
– Not very cushioned

Turns out a 4.5mm thickness seems to be the platonic ideal of cushioning for a hot yoga mat without crossing over into being overly bulky or heavy. With its solid sweat-absorbing ability and legit cushioning, Yoga Hustle’s The Mat is the Goldilocks of hot yoga mats for those who are regulars in hot, sweaty studios but aren’t obsessed with twirling on their mat every single day.

I’m not the only person to consider it the most cushioned yet lightweight hot yoga mat that I trust. Many online reviews from customers cite appreciation for the support, including one from a student with arthritis. Another commenter noted, “I never thought a mat could be life changing but seriously, this mat has transformed my practice. It is secure and supportive and my feet feel wonderful on it.”

Those days when I need even more joint support than usual, I do need to slide a blanket under my knees, but that’s a fair trade-off for how lightweight The Mat feels. And suffice it to say, I’ve never needed to throw a towel down to absorb excess sweat.

On a more aesthetic level, the designs are subtle and laser engraved, so they’re unique yet not distracting.

Best for: Anyone who wants grip and support in a lightweight option that won’t make you curse if you commute by foot or bike to your studio. The thickness is likely to be sufficiently supportive for anyone except those with most intense cushioning needs.

How We Test Hot Yoga Mats

I’ve been teaching yoga for more than 12 years and practicing for more than 15 years. During that time, I’ve practiced on literally dozens of different yoga mats, many of them specifically designed for hot yoga. I also took into consideration the countless comments I’ve heard from students as well as other teachers along the way. And, of course, I also explored online ratings from customers. Each mat was practiced on more than once and, for many of the mats, I have years of familiarity with how it handles.

Other Hot Yoga Mats Tested

Lululemon, Manduka Pro, Manduka GRP,  Manduka EKO, Pendleton Yoga Mat, Oko Living, Yogable, Jade Harmony, Gaiam, Kulae 4mm, Yogi Peace Club Travel Mat

Disclosure: After testing all of the above mats, I was so convinced by the performance of b, Mat and Brogi that I recently applied to be a brand ambassador.
