If you have a “sway back” or too much anterior pelvic tilt, these are the things I would primarily focus on. I’ve had an exaggerated lumbar curve or lordosis for as long as I can remember and have used yoga to help me correct and improve my posture. It’s very normal and healthy to have a curve in your lower back but if it is too pronounced it can lead to pain and issues.

The main things to focus on are:
1 – Core strength: making sure to hug the belly button back towards the spine and properly engage the lower abdominals

2 – Hip flexor stretch: short and tight hip flexors can pull your pelvis forward and exaggerate the tilt.

3 – Posture: Correcting your posture throughout the day and during your yoga practice is the most important. Lengthen your tailbone and draw your lower belly in.

  1. Having lordosis is very rough on your neck! The older you get with this condition you will notice a lot of neck problems. Keeping core really strong helps a lot and also hip flexor stretches.

  2. Hi Kassandra, I was wondering if you could give advice on doing Low Boat and actually keeping the low back on the mat? Each time I try my back just does not want to stay on the ground and I can't bring my toes down to eye level without my upper back and shoulders lifting, even while engaging the core. What am I doing wrong?

  3. I dont know if its related, but i'm also really struggling in forward folds besides this. I stay up so high that i can't feel the leg sensations you talk about for the poses. I would love a video on how to better the flexibility of my pelvic area, or how to adjust poses for when it feels like my bones literally get in the way haha!
